Hodson Bay is just above Athlone on Lough Ree. It is a large harbour, protected from poor weather by the harbour wall. It is beside the Hodson Bay Hotel and just down from Baysports. The Harbour has water points, a slip, and plenty of mooring.
Hodson’s Pillar is the statue on the island just outside the Harbour. This is reputed to be the centre of Ireland.
If you turn right from the harbour, your walk will take you past Baysports, along a quiet country road. It is a cul de sac.
And if you walk the other direction, there is a foot path on the road taking you through a golf club, across a railway track and as far as the busy main Roscommon Road. There used to be a small shop near this junction. However the only shop is now at the garage, heading towards Athlone. It is quite a long walk along a very busy road.
The Hodson Bay Hotel is well known for its carvery lunches and has a great reputation as a wedding venue. They also do breakfast for non-residents. It is reasonable (€12.95 for a full Irish), and please don’t miss out on the pancake machine…make your own pancakes and drizzle chocolate sauce or maple syrup over them. Heaven! And also a big hit with children. The Hotel will also do a day pass for their leisure centre even if you are not staying in the Hotel.
New Water Park
I haven’t tried the water park, Baysports, but it is popular with families. The slides are colourful and eye-catching from the lake. This great idea encourages activity on My Lovely Shannon, and is innovative at the same time. I love the idea that people are encouraged to use the water.
