Made a stop (by car) at Thomastown Harbour, near Killucan on the Royal Canal.
There is parking, a lovely canal walk, a quiet harbour with a lock and bridge, and a pub.
I walked along the towpath, picking out lots of wildflowers, some bees and red dragonflies flitting about, and even a heron. He was a little too far for photographing, but he stayed quite still while I watched. Loving the elderberries… reminds me of Dad’s homemade elderberry wine – sweet and dark and with a big flavour.
The harbour has plenty of mooring along a quay wall, as well as lots of mooring posts along the canal bank. The harbour wall on the opposite is sealed off because it is collapsing. The lock, bridge, harbour and walk are all beautifully kept.
A very pretty area for a canal walk or just a meander.
